I started making mineral sun balm as a safe alternative to chemical sunscreen to use on my three small children. I noticed that even products labeled as "clean" still contained titanium dioxide and other preservatives I didn't want to rub on my little ones. So, when I couldn't find a good product to buy on-line, I decided to make my own. Our mineral sun balm uses non-nano zinc oxide to provide protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Zinc oxide is one of only two ingredients the FDA classifies as "safe" in sunscreen products. Other ingredients are: Organic extra virgin olive oil, grass-fed beef tallow, shea butter and beeswax.
Disclaimer: Test on small area first to ensure no skin sensitivity or allergic reaction occurs. As with any homemade product, this product has not been tested by the FDA for safety or efficacy. The SPF level is unknown and cannot be verified without laboratory testing and there is no guarantee against sunburn or skin cancer when using this product. Due to manual mixing, active ingredients may be unevenly distributed. Reapply frequently.
